Thirumalida
Mahadeva Temple, Mallappally is located right on the banks of the river
Manimala. Lord Shiva is the main deity that is worshipped in this temple. The
temple is unique and different in some ways. The Lord is facing the western
side of the river in the temple. It is believed that the shrine is self mounted
on earth, and this is the reason why it is worshipped by many people. The
shrine of this temple is often compared with the shrine in Kashi Viswanath.
There is a
typical history associated with this temple. A woman of a lower caste came here
to collect grasses. She struck her sickle to a stone and was surprised to find
blood. The rulers of the area were informed. It was a miracle and the shrine of
Lord Shiva was found. Since the name of the women who first recognized the
shrine was Thirumali, the temple was named after her.
